Military Cracks Kidnap Ring In Plateau, Frees Victim & Seizes Ransom Cash

Troops Record Breakthrough in Plateau Anti-Kidnapping Operation
TROOPS attached to Operation Enduring Peace, a joint military security task force, have rescued a kidnapped woman and recovered ₦8 million ransom earlier paid to her abductors in Plateau State.
Military authorities described the development as a major breakthrough in ongoing operations aimed at dismantling kidnapping cells and armed criminal networks operating across vulnerable communities in the North-Central state.
How the Rescue Happened
According to the task force spokesperson, Captain Chinonso Oteh, the operation followed intelligence extracted from an arrested suspect who allegedly confessed involvement in the abduction.
Security operatives reportedly used the information to trace the victim to Padam Forest in Qua’an Pan Local Government Area, where she was found and safely rescued during a coordinated operation.
The victim had earlier been abducted from the Bauna area of Shendam Local Government Area on 19 April, according to officials.
₦8 Million Returned to Family
Authorities also confirmed the recovery of the ₦8 million ransom allegedly paid by the victim’s relatives during negotiations with the kidnappers.
The recovered funds were subsequently returned to the family, an unusual development in kidnapping cases where ransom payments are rarely recovered after release or rescue of victims.
Growing Kidnapping Threat in Plateau
The incident highlights the continued security pressure facing Plateau communities, where kidnapping, armed attacks, and rural banditry have created fear in several local government areas.
Though Plateau has long battled communal violence, criminal kidnapping for ransom has increasingly emerged as a parallel threat, particularly in border communities linked to neighbouring states.
Security analysts say forests and remote terrain in parts of Shendam and Qua’an Pan provide temporary hideouts for armed gangs.
Why the Operation Matters
Experts note that intelligence-led arrests and ransom recovery can weaken criminal networks by:
- Disrupting financing channels
- Discouraging repeat operations
- Restoring public confidence
- Encouraging cooperation with law enforcement
However, they warn that sustained patrols, surveillance, and prosecutions are needed to prevent regrouping.
Continued Manhunt Underway
Military authorities said follow-up operations are ongoing in identified hideouts across Qua’an Pan and Shendam to track down other suspected members of the kidnapping syndicate.
Residents are hopeful the operation signals a tougher security response in a region that has faced repeated threats in recent months.
