Akwa Ibom Raises COVID-19 Alert After Outbreak In Neighbouring State

Government Activates Preventive Measures
THE Akwa Ibom State Government has urged residents to remain vigilant following confirmed reports of a COVID-19 outbreak in a neighbouring state.
In a press release dated 26 April 2026, the government said the advisory became necessary because of the close geographic, social and economic ties between Akwa Ibom and surrounding states.
Governor Umo Eno, after receiving a briefing from the Commissioner for Health, directed the Ministry of Health to immediately activate heightened surveillance across all entry points, health facilities and communities.
The government said disease surveillance officers and rapid response teams have also been placed on alert to promptly detect and manage any suspected cases.
Residents Advised to Follow Safety Protocols
Citizens were advised to observe preventive health measures, including regular handwashing with soap and water, use of alcohol-based sanitisers, and wearing face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces.
The advisory also urged residents to avoid close contact with persons showing symptoms, refrain from handshakes and physical greetings, and seek immediate medical attention if they develop fever, cough or breathing difficulties.
Healthcare workers were reminded to maintain a high level of suspicion and strictly follow infection prevention and control protocols.
Collaboration With NCDC Strengthened
Governor Eno also directed the Ministry of Health to strengthen collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and other relevant agencies to ensure effective monitoring and coordinated response efforts.
The government reassured residents of its commitment to protecting public health and preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
Public Warned Against False Information
Residents were urged to rely only on verified information from the Ministry of Health and avoid spreading rumours capable of causing panic.
An enquiry desk has been established at the Ministry of Health to assist members of the public.
Officials listed for enquiries are:
- Director of Public Health, Dr. Bassey Akpan – 0803-532-15-13
- State Epidemiologist, Dr. Nchiek Edet Eneh – 0803-872-22-44
