DESOPADEC Boosts Livelihoods With Cassava, Fish Farm Projects In Warri

Targeted Interventions in Warri Communities
IN a move to strengthen local economies and promote food security, the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission has handed over agricultural projects to beneficiaries in Ugbodede and Madagho communities in Delta State.
The initiative includes a cassava farm in Ugbodede, Warri South Local Government Area, and a fish farm in Madagho, Warri South-West, both aimed at creating income opportunities for residents.
Driving Agriculture-Led Development
At the handover ceremony, DESOPADEC’s Executive Director for Planning, Research and Statistics, Pst. Efele Eyewuoma Nicholas, highlighted agriculture as a key driver of economic empowerment in rural communities.
He urged beneficiaries to maximise the opportunity, noting that the projects were designed to encourage entrepreneurship, boost food production, and strengthen local value chains.
According to him, the success of the initiative depends largely on effective management and community ownership.
Community Response and Expectations
Beneficiaries selected for the cassava project include Ikanone Ofeoeitse, Oritsema Kingsway, and Anirejuoritse Bojor, while Elliot Tonwe, Solomon Uwawah, and Bemigho Pade Uwan will oversee the fish farm in Madagho.
They commended DESOPADEC for the intervention, describing it as timely and impactful, particularly in the face of rising economic challenges.
The beneficiaries also pledged to ensure the sustainability of the projects, with expectations that they would generate employment and improve household incomes.
Sustaining Impact Beyond Handover
The initiative underscores DESOPADEC’s broader strategy of promoting inclusive development in oil-producing communities through practical, income-generating projects.
Observers note that while such programmes offer immediate relief, their long-term impact will depend on continuous monitoring, access to markets, and support systems that enable beneficiaries to scale operations.
If sustained, the projects could serve as a model for community-driven agricultural development across the Niger Delta.
