Asagba Of Asaba Hosts Tax Ombud CEO, Urges Legacy-Driven Leadership

Royal Reception in Asaba
THE palace of the Asagba of Asaba played host to a high-level delegation led by John Nwabueze, Chief Executive Officer of the Office of the Tax Ombud of Nigeria, in a courtesy visit that underscored the intersection of traditional authority and public service.
Receiving the delegation on 19 March 2026, Epiphany Azinge warmly welcomed the newly appointed CEO and his management team, describing the visit as both symbolic and significant for the Asaba community.
Commendation and Community Pride
The monarch congratulated Nwabueze on his appointment, describing it as a moment of pride for Asaba Kingdom. He also expressed appreciation to Bola Tinubu for appointing an indigene of Asaba to such a strategic national role.
Reflecting on past eras, the Asagba recalled a time when several sons of Asaba held prominent leadership positions across key national institutions, describing the current appointment as a rekindling of that legacy.
Renewed Call for Inclusion
The monarch used the occasion to reiterate earlier appeals made to President Tinubu during a meeting in Abuja in March 2025.
According to him, one of the key requests presented was the need for the inclusion of qualified sons and daughters of Asaba in national appointments.
He stressed that such representation not only promotes equity but also reinforces confidence in governance among local communities.
Charge to Lead with Integrity
Addressing the Tax Ombud CEO directly, the Asagba emphasised the importance of legacy, urging Nwabueze to approach his role with diligence and integrity.
“As a pioneer CEO, you will face multiple challenges,” the monarch noted, urging him to execute his responsibilities with a clear sense of purpose and accountability.
He reminded the CEO that his position carries not just institutional responsibility, but also the expectations of the Asaba community.
Institutional Expectations and Regional Impact
The monarch also commended the decision to establish the South-South headquarters of the Tax Ombud in Asaba, describing it as a strategic move that would enhance regional access to tax dispute resolution mechanisms.
He extended similar advice to members of the management team, urging them to uphold professionalism and contribute meaningfully to the success of the institution.
CEO Seeks Royal Blessing
In his remarks, John Nwabueze expressed gratitude for the warm reception, describing the visit as a fulfilment of a promise made upon his appointment in September 2025.
He briefed the monarch on the objectives of the Office of the Tax Ombud, highlighting its role in addressing taxpayer grievances and promoting fairness in tax administration.
The CEO also sought royal blessings and guidance, acknowledging the cultural and moral significance of the Asagba’s throne.
Bridging Tradition and Governance
The visit illustrates the enduring relevance of traditional institutions in Nigeria’s governance landscape.
Beyond ceremonial value, such engagements serve as platforms for dialogue, legitimacy, and community alignment with public institutions.
A Moment of Symbolism and Expectation
As the delegation departed, the Asagba invoked ancestral blessings upon them, wishing safe travels and success in their mission.
For observers, the meeting represents more than a courtesy call—it reflects a convergence of expectation, responsibility, and the enduring influence of heritage in shaping modern leadership.
