Governor Okowa Mourns Professor Sam Ukala, Says His Death Is A Great Loss
DELTA State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has expressed deep sadness over the death of Nigeria’s renowned writer and dramatist, Professor Sam Ukala.
Professor Ukala passed away on Monday night after a short illness. He was 73 years old.
Until his retirement, he was a Professor of Theatre Arts and Drama at Delta State University, Abraka.
In a statement released on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Olisa Ifeajika, Governor Okowa described Professor Ukala as a great literary icon, a dedicated teacher, and a patriot who made major contributions to literature in Nigeria and around the world.
“Professor Ukala’s work brought attention to Delta, Nigeria, and Africa. He will be remembered by literature lovers globally,” Okowa said.
Ukala was the winner of several top literary awards, including: The 2014 Nigeria Prize for Literature for his play Iredi War, The 1989 ANA/British Council Prize for Drama for his work Akpakaland
Governor Okowa said these works and many others earned Ukala a respected place in the world of drama and storytelling.
Okowa also praised Professor Ukala for developing the theory of folkism, a literary style that draws from African history and culture. Ukala believed plays should be told in the style of African folktales, and this idea gained international recognition.
The governor noted that until his death, Ukala served as a member of the Governing Council of three newly established universities in Delta State. He worked to ensure that the schools launched successfully.
“With his passing, the literary world has lost a giant. His absence will be deeply felt,” Okowa said.
Governor Okowa extended his condolences to the Ukala family of Mbiri, the Ika nation and the global literary community
He prayed for comfort for all who mourn him and asked God to grant the late professor eternal rest.
“Professor Ukala’s impact on African drama and folktale will never be forgotten,” the governor concluded.

Late Prof. Sam Ukala.
