NLC Backs FCTA Workers, Endorses Indefinite Strike

Labour Union Affirms Solidarity
THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared full support for workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) over their ongoing indefinite strike, describing the action as justified and necessary in the face of alleged violations of workers’ rights.
The declaration was contained in a statement signed by the NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, and released to journalists on Friday in Abuja.
Allegations of Wage and Pension Violations
According to Ajaero, the NLC’s position followed consultations between the labour centre’s leadership and the Joint Unions Action Congress representing FCTA workers. He accused the FCTA management of engaging in wage abuses, administrative impunity and persistent violations of workers’ fundamental rights.
The NLC president alleged that promotion and award arrears covering five months had been illegally withheld from workers, describing the action as a denial of earned income.
He further claimed that pension contributions and National Housing Fund deductions had not been remitted since May 2025, a development he said threatened the welfare and future security of both serving and retired workers.
Claims of Intimidation and Rights Violations
Ajaero also condemned reported acts of intimidation against workers, including restrictions on phone usage and alleged incarceration of some staff members. He described the actions as unacceptable and in violation of constitutional provisions and international labour conventions to which Nigeria is a signatory.
“These actions undermine basic freedoms and the dignity of labour,” the statement said.
Directive to Intensify Strike
The NLC president directed all affiliate unions operating within the Federal Capital Territory to fully align with the strike and intensify industrial action. He also instructed workers to mobilise en masse to the National Industrial Court on 26 January for proceedings related to the dispute.
In addition, Ajaero called for daily prayers and solidarity sessions across designated venues in the FCT to sustain morale and unity among workers.
He warned that workers’ patience had been exhausted and urged the FCTA authorities to urgently address the grievances to avert further escalation.
