AFCON 2025: Nigeria & Egypt To Battle For Bronze
By FRED LONGJOHN OBEH
Analytical Match Context
NIGERIA’S Super Eagles will take on Egypt in the third-place match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as both teams seek a consolation finish to their campaigns.
Nigeria’s semi-final hopes were ended by host nation Morocco, who capitalised on home support to edge past the Super Eagles and secure a place in the final. Despite Nigeria’s resilience, the defeat brought an end to their bid for another AFCON title.
Egypt suffered a similar fate earlier, falling to defending champions Senegal. The Pharaohs were undone by a moment of brilliance from Sadio Mané, whose decisive goal sealed Senegal’s passage into the final and denied Egypt a shot at continental glory.
With the final now confirmed between Morocco and Senegal, the two losing semi-finalists will meet in the third-place playoff, a fixture that often serves as a test of character and depth.
The Super Eagles and the Pharaohs will lock horns on Saturday 17 January 2026, at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca. Beyond the bronze medal, the encounter provides an opportunity for both sides to restore pride and reward their supporters.
Nigeria will be keen to finish strongly after missing out on the final, while Egypt will also look to avoid ending the tournament empty-handed. Given the rich history between the two nations, the playoff promises to be fiercely contested.
Meanwhile, the tournament will culminate on Sunday 18 January 2026, when Morocco face Senegal in the AFCON 2025 final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
