Travel, Parties & Health: NCDC Issues Festive Season Advisory

By STELLA JOHNSON OGBOVOVEH
THE Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has appealed to Nigerians to exercise greater health consciousness during the festive season, cautioning that the period’s increased travel and social interaction often heighten exposure to health risks. The agency said maintaining healthy routines during celebrations is critical to preventing avoidable illnesses.
NCDC Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris, explained that the festive period is frequently associated with physical exhaustion, dehydration, poor nutrition and limited physical activity. He warned that these lifestyle changes, if left unchecked, could reduce immunity and overall well-being.
To mitigate these risks, Idris advised Nigerians to stay hydrated, get enough rest and remain physically active despite tight schedules. He also emphasised regular handwashing and personal hygiene, particularly in public spaces. Stressing moderation, he cautioned against excessive intake of alcohol, sugary beverages and processed foods, noting their potential to undermine health. Idris further encouraged Nigerians to pay attention to mental health by slowing down when necessary, stating that intentional self-care during the holidays supports healthier celebrations and a stronger start to the new year.
