2027: Five Women Join Race For Delta’s Three Senatorial Seats

Five Women Enter the Race
FIVE women will contest Delta State’s three senatorial seats in the 2027 general elections, according to the final list released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The candidates are spread across the three senatorial districts. Two will contest in Delta Central, two in Delta North and one in Delta South.
INEC released the final list for the Presidential and National Assembly elections on Tuesday in Asaba. INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony signed the document.
A total of 43 candidates will contest the three senatorial seats.
Delta Central Contest
Delta Central has the highest number of candidates, with 16 contenders.
Two of them are women. They are Onome Dema of the Labour Party and Amanda Omoraka of the Young Progressives Party.
The other candidates include Luckie Umukoro of Accord, Peter Onakpoma of Action Alliance and Kuvie Oyibo of the Action Democratic Party.
Peter Obukohwo represents the Action Peoples Party, while Kelvin Omogaga is the candidate of the African Action Congress. Benjamin Ewhrudiakpor is contesting on the platform of the African Democratic Congress.
The list also includes Ede Dafinone of the All Progressives Congress, Monday Nurhierume of the Allied Peoples Movement and Nathan Osume of the New Democrats Party.
Augustine Onori of the National Rescue Movement, Ovie Omo-Agege of the National Democratic Congress and Arhagba Ighogbedjere of the Peoples Democratic Party are also in the race.
Godwin Ikuru of the Social Democratic Party and Oghenebrorhie Obenobe of the Zenith Labour Party complete the Delta Central list.
Delta North Race
Delta North has 14 candidates, including two women.
They are Vivian Nwabuokei of Accord and Maryann Oluebube Nwankwo of the Allied Peoples Movement.
Other contenders include Victor Ojie of the Action Peoples Party, Celestine Jebosa of the African Action Congress and Valentine Ogoliegbune of the African Democratic Congress.
Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is also contesting the seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
Augustine Ojogbo of the Democratic Labour Alliance and Rex Biose of the Labour Party are among the other candidates.
John Ndidi of the National Rescue Movement, Victor Ochei of the National Democratic Congress and Onyeama Ogannah of the Peoples Democratic Party are also listed.
Bob Ofunne of the Peoples Redemption Party, Victor Onyebuchi of the Social Democratic Party and Emmanuel Okoh of the Zenith Labour Party complete the field.
One Woman in Delta South
Delta South has 13 candidates.
Esther Avwivoerjore of the Zenith Labour Party is the only woman on the list.
She will face Jim Ameh of Accord, Felix Odharо of Action Alliance, Emmanuel Ogba of the Action Democratic Party and Felix Avuwa of the Action Peoples Party.
Other candidates include Thomas Joel-Onowakpo of the All Progressives Congress, Patrick Upama of the Allied Peoples Movement and Peter Ubreye Asability of the Democratic Labour Alliance.
Elo Adhekpukoli of the National Rescue Movement, Freedom Adowei of the National Democratic Congress and Kingley Otuaro of the Peoples Democratic Party are also contesting.
Oghenetega Morrison of the Social Democratic Party and Mike Ubebe of the Young Progressives Party complete the list.
Women Across the Three Districts
The five female candidates mean women will feature in the senatorial contests across all three districts.
Delta voters will therefore see female candidates on the ballot in Delta Central, Delta North and Delta South when the state goes to the polls on 16 January 2027.
