Technology Boost For Elections As INEC Rolls Out Online CVR Registration

INEC Expands Access to Voter Registration with Deadline Extension
THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a two-week extension of the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise while introducing a new online self-service registration platform as part of efforts to broaden access to voter registration and strengthen electoral participation.
Under the revised timetable, the registration exercise, previously scheduled to end on 10 July, will now continue until 26 July 2026.
The commission said the decision followed an assessment of the ongoing exercise and consultations with various stakeholders involved in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Decision Informed by Nationwide Feedback
INEC disclosed that reports received from its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders indicated the need to provide additional time for eligible Nigerians who were yet to complete their registration.
According to the commission, the extension is intended to ensure that more citizens are captured in the national Register of Voters ahead of future electoral activities.
It added that expanding voter participation remains central to its mandate of conducting credible, inclusive and transparent elections.
Self-Service Online Registration Begins
As part of efforts to modernise voter registration, INEC also unveiled a self-service online registration system for eligible first-time voters.
The platform, accessible through the commission’s dedicated CVR portal, enables prospective voters to complete their registration process using their personal devices.
INEC said the system incorporates identity verification and biometric validation, providing a secure and technology-driven approach to voter registration while improving convenience for applicants.
The commission believes the innovation will reduce pressure on physical registration centres and simplify access to electoral services for Nigerians.
Commission Encourages Wider Participation
INEC appealed to all eligible Nigerians who have yet to register to utilise both the extended registration period and the online self-service platform.
The commission maintained that the twin initiatives form part of broader efforts to deploy technology in improving electoral administration, expanding accessibility and ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has the opportunity to participate in the country’s democratic process.
It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a credible, inclusive and efficient voter registration system that inspires public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral framework.
