Team Nigeria Shines With 14-Medal Haul At Uganda Para Badminton International

Nigeria Dominates Continental Para Badminton Championship
NIGERIA’S para badminton team delivered an exceptional performance at the 2026 Uganda Para Badminton International Championship, returning home with an impressive haul of 14 medals, including nine gold and five silver medals.
The championship, held in Uganda from 7 to 12 July, showcased Nigeria’s growing dominance in African para badminton, with the athletes producing outstanding displays across both wheelchair and standing categories.
The strong outing further reinforces the country’s status as one of the continent’s leading para badminton nations while boosting confidence ahead of future international competitions and the race for qualification to the Paralympic Games.
Athletes Excel Across Multiple Categories
Leading Nigeria’s medal charge was Lyka Brown, who claimed gold in the WH1 Women’s Singles before partnering Chukwuemeka Ijeoma Gift to capture another gold in the WH1/WH2 Women’s Doubles.
Chukwuemeka also emerged champion in the WH2 Women’s Singles, adding another gold to Nigeria’s impressive tally.
In the men’s wheelchair events, Emmanuel Ifeanacho Ohaeri secured gold in the WH2 Men’s Singles and later teamed up with Brown to win the WH1/WH2 Mixed Doubles title. Ohaeri also earned a silver medal alongside Ekeoma Samuel in the WH1/WH2 Men’s Doubles.
Samuel added another silver in the WH1 Men’s Singles before combining with Chukwuemeka to finish second in the WH1/WH2 Mixed Doubles.
Nigeria also excelled in the standing events. Obinna Precious Nwosu won gold in the SL3 Men’s Singles, while Eze Sunday Chukwuebuka secured silver in the same category. Nnanna Jeremiah Chigozie captured the SL4 Men’s Singles title before partnering Eze to win gold in the SL3/SU5 Men’s Doubles.
Eneojo Elijah Agada completed the golden performances by winning the SU5 Men’s Singles before joining Obinna Nwosu to claim silver in the SL3/SU5 Men’s Doubles.
Federation Targets Paralympic Success
President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Francis Orbih, commended the athletes for once again making the country proud on the international stage.
He reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to supporting para badminton athletes through improved preparation and participation in major international tournaments, stressing that the long-term objective remains qualifying more Nigerians for the Paralympic Games.
Orbih noted that the federation hopes to build on the achievements of Paralympic medallist Eniola Bolaji by expanding Nigeria’s presence and competitiveness at future Paralympic competitions.
Sponsors Hailed for Supporting Success
The BFN president also acknowledged the contributions of the Abia State Government, Bayelsa State Government and the Police College Badminton Club, Lagos, whose sponsorship enabled several athletes to participate in the championship.
He expressed optimism that stronger partnerships with government agencies and private organisations would further accelerate the growth of para badminton in Nigeria.
Nigeria’s outstanding performance in Uganda provides fresh momentum for the national team as preparations continue for upcoming continental championships and the Paralympic qualification campaign.
