Oborevwori Cautions Against Use Of Social Media To Spread Fake News, Misinformation, Half-Truth
GOVERNOR Sheriff Oborevwori has called for a strategic deployment of the social media to attract investors, expand tourism, support entrepreneurs and create jobs.
He made the call in Asaba at the 3rd edition of the Delta Social Media Summit with the theme: “Brand Delta, Grow Delta”.
The Governor, who was represented by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Hon Prince Johnson Erijo, said branding was not all about slogans, but a call to action to telling the state’s authentic story: the resilience of Deltans, the richness of their culture, the abundance of their resources and the innovation of the youth.
He added that branding and growing Delta was a task that required collective efforts of all, and call on influencers, entrepreneurs, creators, policymakers and indeed every Deltan to join hands with government in projecting the state’s story, showcasing its heritage, highlighting opportunities and inspiring pride in its identity.
Governor Oborevwori noted that in today’s digital era, social media was not only a tool for communication but also a platform for innovation, entrepreneurship and global engagement.
He said in recognition of the importance of the digital economy, the state government had launched programmes such as the M.O.R.E. Agenda, Information and Communications Technology Youth Empowerment Programme (ICT-YEP), which offered specialized training in web development, graphic design, cybersecurity, mobile development and digital media.
According to him, “The goal is clear: to equip young Deltans with the skills needed to thrive in a technology-driven world. This administration is committed to empowering our youths to become competitive, creative and impactful. Summits like this one provide the platform for learning, networking and unleashing the boundless potential of our young people to emerge as digital leaders shaping Delta’s future.
“But let me also sound a note of caution. With the power of social media comes responsibility. We must guard against the spread of fake news, misinformation and half-truths that can undermine the very society we seek to build. I urge you, especially our young digital voices: if in doubt, find out. Verify before you publish or share”.
The Governor stated that the theme of the summit spoke directly to the heart of his administration’s collective vision: “a Delta State that is prosperous, nationally and globally respected, and firmly anchored on its strengths to drive sustainable growth and development”.
In a goodwill message, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, urged youths and other stakeholders to embrace social media as a tool for economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development.
Guwor, who was represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, commended the organizers for their commitment to harnessing digital platforms to transform the state’s economy and create opportunities for young people.
He noted that the theme of the summit reflected the aspirations of the state to use its rich cultural heritage, resources, and human capital to build a strong identity capable of attracting investments and fostering prosperity.
The Speaker emphasized that beyond branding, social media should be maximized as a platform for empowerment, skill acquisition, and entrepreneurship.
Guwor said, “Through strategic engagement, skill acquisition, and innovative thinking, our youths can become content creators, digital marketers, entrepreneurs, and influencers who drive economic diversification and reduce unemployment”.
Earlier in a welcome address, the Summit Convener and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Ossai Ovie Success, said the event was designed to expose young people to the numerous opportunities offered by the social media and equip them with the knowledge and skills that thrived in the digital space.
