No Degree, No Problem: Kenya Clears Path For 2027 Election Candidates

KENYA’S electoral commission has confirmed that candidates will not need a university degree to contest presidential, gubernatorial or parliamentary elections in 2027.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner, Ann Nderitu, disclosed the position while speaking to local media.

She said the current legal framework does not require candidates for the three levels of elective office to hold university degrees.

The clarification follows court decisions that changed Kenya’s electoral requirements ahead of the 2022 elections.

In 2022, the High Court struck down degree requirements for parliamentary, gubernatorial and presidential candidates. The rulings effectively removed university education as a mandatory qualification for those seeking the offices.

However, the rules could still change before the next election.

Nderitu noted that Parliament could introduce new legislation that alters the existing requirements before Kenyans head to the polls.

For now, therefore, aspiring candidates can seek the presidency, governorship or parliamentary seats without a university degree, provided they meet other legal requirements.

Kenya is scheduled to hold its next general election in August 2027.
