Ibadan to Host First Nigerian Poetry Conference In August

Poets and writers to converge in August
THE city of Ibadan is set to host the first Nigerian Poetry Conference, NIPOCON 2026, in what organisers describe as a major milestone for the country’s literary community.
Scheduled for 7 and 8 August, the conference will assemble poets, scholars, writers and lovers of spoken word under the theme “Poetry for Activism and Change.”
The organisers say the event will explore how poetry can be used as a tool for advocacy, civic engagement and cultural renewal.
Academic focus and rich programme
Dr. Akin Tella of the University of Ibadan has been named keynote speaker for the conference.
His academic interests span language studies, literary stylistics, political communication and Nigerian cultural texts.
The venue for the conference is Elders’ Place, located off CAC Bus Stop on Idi-Ape-Basorun Road, Ibadan. The Convener can be reached on +234 812 246 7487 or WhatsApp on +234 803 482 2937.
Events will include a welcome cocktail, interactive sessions, literary exchanges and a closing dinner.
Growing support for literary culture
Registration packages will include conference materials, branded items, meals and certificates for participants.
Organisers also announced partnerships with media outlets, publishers, youth centres and literary organisations supporting the conference.
They expressed hope that NIPOCON 2026 would become an annual platform for promoting poetry, creativity and intellectual exchange in Nigeria.
