Hisbah Begins New Morality Crackdown In Kano

THE Kano State Hisbah Board has begun a new enforcement campaign tagged Operation Kano First, as authorities move to intensify action against activities considered immoral.
The initiative comes with a warning that offenders may face arrest and prosecution.
Hisbah officials have not publicly identified every activity that the operation will target.
That lack of detail leaves questions about the full scope of the campaign and how enforcement officers will apply it across Kano.
Still, the board’s previous operations offer some indication of the areas likely to attract attention.
Hisbah has historically acted against prostitution, alcohol-related activities, gambling and public behaviour considered indecent under the moral and religious standards enforced in the state.
The campaign has received additional logistical support from the Kano State Government.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf recently donated 10 vehicles and 50 motorcycles to the Hisbah Board to strengthen patrols and improve its capacity to respond to incidents.
The new equipment could allow the agency to extend its operations into more communities and increase the visibility of its officers.
Operation Kano First therefore combines moral enforcement with an expanded capacity for patrol and surveillance.
The initiative also reflects the continuing role of Hisbah in Kano’s system of public regulation, where religious principles remain influential in shaping certain laws and standards of conduct.
As the operation unfolds, attention will likely focus on the specific offences targeted, the methods used by enforcement officers and how the state balances moral regulation with legal safeguards.
For now, the board has made its position clear: activities that violate the laws and regulations under its mandate may attract enforcement action, including arrest and prosecution.
