From Ikom To The World: Ekuum Cultural Band Takes Ofutop Heritage To Calabar Carnival

By JULIET EKANEM
THE Cross River State Government has welcomed the Ekuum Cultural Band of Ofutop Nation, Ikom Local Government Area, into the 2026 Carnival Calabar Festival following the group’s successful registration.
The band’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Oyama Osam Ntun, disclosed this during a telephone conversation, describing the opportunity as a platform to showcase local talent and promote Ofutop cultural heritage.
According to Ntun, the festival will allow members to present traditional stories passed down through generations. Moreover, their participation will introduce the community’s music, rhythms and customs to a wider audience.
He explained that the band completed the required registration procedures and secured approval from the relevant authorities. However, Ekuum will participate as a guest band rather than compete against other carnival groups.
Ntun, who recently received the Calabar Heritage “Young Achiever of the Year” Award, said he remained committed to taking indigenous culture beyond its traditional boundaries.
He added that the initiative would connect professional excellence with cultural preservation while giving Ofutop artistic traditions greater visibility.
Through its participation, the Ekuum Cultural Band hopes to bring the heritage of Ofutop Nation to the international stage and strengthen appreciation for the community’s cultural identity.
