From Asaba To Ife: Royal Visit Sparks Call For Deeper Cultural Unity
Royal Visit Highlights Shared Heritage
A courtesy visit by Olori Temitope Enitan Ogunwusi, wife of the Ooni of Ife, to the Asagba of Asaba has renewed calls for stronger relationships among Nigeria’s traditional institutions.
The Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, OON, used the occasion to advocate regular interaction, cultural exchange and dialogue among monarchs and royal families.
He said such engagements could help preserve Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage while promoting greater unity among its diverse communities.
Traditional Institutions Can Build Bridges
Azinge said Nigeria’s cultural diversity should provide a basis for cooperation rather than division.
He encouraged traditional rulers to maintain meaningful relationships through visits and the exchange of knowledge about their respective histories and cultures.
The Asagba described Delta State as a “mini Nigeria”, pointing to its wide range of ethnic groups and cultural traditions.
He said Asaba remained open to initiatives that could deepen understanding and cooperation among different kingdoms.
Azinge’s Vision for Asaba
The monarch also used the occasion to explain his approach to traditional leadership in Asaba.
He said he was moving the institution beyond the conventional idea of a monarch who waits for subjects to come to the palace.
Instead, he said, he had chosen to take the throne closer to the people by engaging directly with them and responding to issues concerning their welfare.
Healthcare and community development, he noted, formed part of the issues receiving attention under his people-oriented approach.
Azinge said his ultimate goal was to leave a meaningful legacy for Asaba.
He maintained that leadership should not be measured solely by status, but by the positive difference it makes in people’s lives.
Respect for the Ooni
The Asagba expressed strong respect for the Ooni of Ife, describing him as a revered and highly respected traditional ruler.
He also praised Olori Temitope for her humility, composure and dignified conduct.
Azinge said her manner reflected both excellent upbringing and an understanding of the responsibilities attached to her royal position.
He further disclosed plans to visit the Ooni in the future and asked the Olori to convey his warm regards to the monarch.
Olori Temitope Seeks Closer Ties
Olori Temitope said her visit centred on respect for the Asagba and the desire to strengthen the relationship between the two traditional institutions.
She described Azinge as a brother, confidant and wise monarch.
According to her, the Ooni would be interested in building a closer relationship with the Asagba and drawing from his experience and wisdom.
She described the kingdoms of Ife and Asaba as belonging to one family, further emphasising the historical and cultural ties between them.
A Celebration of Friendship & Heritage
The Olori also praised Azinge’s intellectual depth, accomplishments and profile.
She expressed appreciation for the warm reception at the Asagba’s palace and prayed for continued divine guidance, long life, peace and success during his reign.
The visit concluded with an exchange of gifts between the two royal institutions.
Beyond the ceremonial gestures, the engagement highlighted the potential of traditional institutions to promote cultural understanding, strengthen inter-kingdom relationships and reinforce Nigeria’s shared heritage.
