Flamingos Land In Abuja, Switch Focus To World Cup

By AUGUSTUS ISICHEI
NIGERIA’S U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have returned to Abuja after conquering the WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup in Côte d’Ivoire.
The young Nigerians arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at about 7:45 p.m. They were welcomed by officials of the Nigeria Football Federation.
Having lifted the regional trophy, the team can now turn its attention to the next major assignment.
The Flamingos won all five matches in Yamoussoukro. They also scored 17 goals and conceded just two throughout the competition.
Moreover, the tournament gave coach Hakeem Busari and his technical crew another opportunity to test the players in competitive conditions.
Now back in the capital, the squad is expected to take a brief break. Afterward, the players will return to camp in Abuja.
That next phase will allow the coaching staff to review the team’s performance in Côte d’Ivoire. It will also provide an opportunity to work on areas that need improvement before the global tournament.
Meanwhile, the Flamingos will aim to preserve the momentum generated by their regional triumph.
The WAFU-B campaign offered more than a trophy. It also exposed the players to different tactical challenges and competitive pressure.
Consequently, the technical crew will look to build on those lessons as preparations continue.
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team has already secured a place at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. The global competition is therefore the bigger target as the team enters another phase of preparation.
For the Flamingos, the message is clear. The WAFU-B success has closed one chapter, but the road to Morocco continues.
