Fee Proposal Suspended After Public Outcry

THE Federal Government has shelved plans to increase registration fees for the 2027 WAEC and NECO senior secondary school examinations following public concerns over the proposed adjustment.

The Federal Ministry of Education confirmed that the earlier notice announcing the review had been withdrawn to allow for further discussions with critical stakeholders before any decision is implemented.

Operational Costs Behind Proposed Review

The Ministry explained that the proposed fee adjustment was informed by the growing cost of administering credible public examinations across the country.

Among the factors cited were rising expenditures on examination logistics, security arrangements, printing, technological infrastructure and quality control measures required to maintain examination standards.

Officials noted that examination fees have remained relatively stable for several years despite increasing operational costs.

Inclusive Consultation Process Begins

Following directives from the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Ministry said it would embark on a comprehensive consultation process involving major stakeholders within the education sector.

The engagement will include examination bodies, state education authorities, school administrators, private school associations, parents, organised labour and other relevant interest groups whose inputs will help guide government policy.

No Immediate Change to Examination Fees

The Ministry emphasised that candidates preparing for the 2027 WAEC and NECO examinations should note that no fee increase has been approved.

It assured Nigerians that any future review would only be considered after the completion of consultations and careful assessment of stakeholders’ recommendations.

Balancing Sustainability and Affordability

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring that examination systems remain financially sustainable without undermining access to education.

According to the Ministry, protecting students’ welfare while maintaining the quality and integrity of national examinations remains a key objective under the Renewed Hope Agenda for the education sector.
