Eno Unveils Aviation Ministry As Akwa Ibom Airport Goes International

International Status Marks Turning Point
AKWA Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has declared that the upgrade of Victor Attah International Airport to international status will drive economic growth beyond the state, positioning it as a strategic hub within the Gulf of Guinea.
Speaking after returning from the maiden international flight from Accra, the governor described the development as a milestone capable of transforming connectivity across West Africa.
Boost for Tourism and Regional Connectivity
Governor Eno noted that the airport’s new status eliminates the need for indirect regional travel routes, allowing passengers to connect directly to neighbouring countries.
He linked the development to the state’s broader tourism ambitions, citing projects such as:
- ARISE Palm Resort
- Mary Slessor House
- Lord Lugard Amalgamation House
According to him, Akwa Ibom is positioning itself as a conference and tourism destination comparable to regional leaders.
Creation of Aviation Ministry
In a major policy move, the governor announced the creation of a Ministry of Aviation and Airport Development to oversee the sector’s expansion.
Uwem Ekanem, Managing Director of the Ibom Airport Development Company, has been appointed to supervise the ministry pending the appointment of a substantive commissioner.
Infrastructure Expansion and Workforce Development
The governor revealed ongoing investments across the aviation ecosystem, including:
- Second runway construction
- Apron expansion
- Aviation village development
- Advanced security systems
He also highlighted human capital development efforts, noting that:
- 20 pilots have been trained in Paris
- Additional cadet pilots are training in Ethiopia
- Engineers are being trained locally and internationally
Ibom Air Growth and Future Privatisation
Governor Eno disclosed that Ibom Air plans to expand its fleet to ten aircraft, with a new Airbus expected soon.
He added that the airline may eventually be listed on the stock exchange as part of a long-term sustainability and privatisation strategy.
Acknowledging Federal and Past Leadership Support
The governor credited Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the airport’s international designation and commended Festus Keyamo for regulatory support.
He also paid tribute to former leaders, including:
- Victor Attah
- Godswill Akpabio
- Udom Emmanuel
describing the airport’s evolution as a product of sustained leadership.
