Ebonyi Flood: Over 134 Homes Damaged, No Fatality Recorded

THE Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency (EBS-EMA) has confirmed that no life was lost after flooding ravaged Akaeze Community in Ivo Local Government Area of the state.
The flood followed a heavy downpour on Tuesday night. However, despite the destruction recorded across the community, authorities said there were no fatalities.
Speaking in Abakaliki on Friday, EBS-EMA Executive Director Clement Ovuoba said the agency had inspected the affected areas to assess the damage. He also disclosed that officials were considering evacuating residents whose homes had been submerged.
Ovuoba explained that the flood affected houses, farmlands and domestic animals. Because the rain fell at night, many residents were already asleep when the disaster occurred.
So far, the agency has focused on determining the extent of the destruction and identifying the immediate needs of affected families. At the same time, it has recommended the distribution of relief materials to the victims.
The recommendation has been forwarded to Governor Francis Nwifuru for consideration as the state responds to the disaster.
More than 134 houses were reportedly affected by the flooding. Farmlands and livestock also suffered major losses, further increasing the impact on residents who depend on agriculture and animal husbandry.
Meanwhile, EBS-EMA is expected to continue its assessment of the community. Depending on the findings, the agency could evacuate vulnerable residents while coordinating additional assistance for those whose homes and livelihoods were destroyed.
