Delta NUJ: Ahon, Dokubo Urge New Executives To Put Unity & Welfare First

Ahon Calls for Unity & Professional Responsibility
CHIEF Press Secretary to the Delta State Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, has urged the newly elected executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, to prioritise unity, peace and professional responsibility.
Ahon made the appeal during a congratulatory meeting with the union’s new leadership. He stressed that internal cohesion would strengthen the council, protect journalists’ interests and improve its contribution to Delta State’s development.
According to him, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori holds journalists in high regard because of their role in promoting accountability, informing the public and advancing democratic governance.
Consequently, Ahon called for stronger cooperation between the media and the state government. He also urged NUJ members to promote mutual respect, solidarity and understanding in the interest of the profession and the wider community.
Government Pledges Continued Partnership
Ahon assured the union of the state government’s continued partnership and support for its activities and members’ welfare. However, he reminded the new executive that it must maintain professional standards and uphold the ethics of journalism while sustaining a cordial relationship with the government.
He also advised the leadership to address disagreements through dialogue and mutual understanding. In his view, avoidable internal disputes could weaken the council and undermine its progress.
Meanwhile, NUJ National Vice President for Zone F, Comrade Opaka Dokubo, and Zonal Secretary, Comrade John Angese, urged the executive to embrace inclusive leadership, improve internal communication and resolve differences promptly.
They maintained that diverse opinions should strengthen the union rather than create divisions. Therefore, they encouraged the leadership to involve members in decision-making, promote teamwork and place collective interests above personal differences.
Oyowe Promises Inclusive Administration
Similarly, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Comrade Nkem Nwaeke, appealed to journalists to close ranks and work together to improve the union’s capacity to defend professional interests and advance members’ welfare.
Responding, re-elected NUJ Delta State Council Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, described his return to office as an act of divine providence. He pledged to run an inclusive administration built on unity, collaboration and concern for members’ welfare.
Oyowe also promised to work closely with the executive and ensure that members participated in the council’s affairs. He called for their cooperation, stressing that the success of his administration would depend on a shared commitment to peace, responsible leadership and the advancement of journalism in Delta State.
