CNG Rollout Expands As Stations Hit 176, Vehicle Conversions Reach 78,900

NIGERIA’S compressed natural gas (CNG) programme recorded further expansion in August 2026, with operational refuelling stations increasing to 176 and vehicle conversions climbing to 78,900.
The figures were contained in the August Factsheet released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
CNG Infrastructure Expands
According to the report, 65 conversion centres were operational across the country during the month.
Meanwhile, 15,300 conversion kits had been distributed under the national CNG programme. The figures point to a continued expansion of infrastructure supporting the switch to alternative fuels.
Beyond CNG, the NMDPRA data showed increased activity across several segments of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
Oil Production Rises
Crude oil production increased to 1.51 million barrels per day (bpd) in August, compared with 1.49 million bpd in July.
In addition, condensate production stood at 171,143 bpd. Combined, crude and condensate output reached about 1.68 million bpd.
Natural Gas Liquids production was also recorded at 211,226 bpd, while LPG production reached 79,924 metric tonnes during the month.
LPG Supply Records Growth
The authority reported a notable increase in LPG supply. In August, supply reached 103,440 metric tonnes, compared with 62,515 metric tonnes recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.
Similarly, natural gas supply to key sectors remained substantial.
Power generation received 13.48 billion standard cubic feet (SCF) of gas, while gas-based industries received 31.65 billion SCF during the month.
Domestic Refining Maintains Activity
Domestic refining also remained active in August.
Petrol production reached 1.69 billion litres, while diesel output stood at 845 million litres.
Furthermore, aviation fuel production reached 222 million litres. Low Pour Fuel Oil output stood at 102 million litres, while household kerosene production was 14 million litres.
Fuel Supply Improves
The factsheet also showed an increase in average petrol supply.
Petrol availability rose to 73.67 million litres per day in August, from 70.13 million litres per day in July.
Diesel supply averaged 14.67 million litres daily, while aviation fuel availability stood at 2.72 million litres per day.
Household kerosene averaged 873,312 litres daily, while LPG availability reached 3.33 million kilogrammes per day.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s downstream distribution network comprised 1,025 active filling stations, 171 operational gas plants and 62 licensed petroleum depots during the period.
Taken together, the figures reflect continued expansion in CNG infrastructure alongside increased activity in production, refining and petroleum-product distribution across the downstream sector.
