Canada Opens 10 Express Entry Categories for Skilled Workers

CANADA has identified 10 categories of candidates eligible for targeted selection under its 2026 Express Entry system, creating additional pathways for skilled workers whose experience matches the country’s economic and labour-market priorities.

The categories cover French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM occupations, skilled trades, education, transport, physicians, senior managers, researchers and skilled military recruits.

How Category-Based Selection Works

Candidates must first qualify for one of the three immigration programmes managed through Express Entry: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program or Canadian Experience Class.

Eligible candidates are then placed in the Express Entry pool and assigned a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.

For category-based invitation rounds, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) identifies candidates who meet the requirements of a particular category and ranks them according to their CRS scores. Meeting a category requirement therefore does not by itself guarantee an invitation to apply for permanent residence.

French-Language Proficiency

The first category is French-language proficiency.

The category is designed to support Canada’s objective of attracting French-speaking immigrants, particularly outside Quebec.

Candidates must demonstrate a minimum French-language level of 7 in all four language abilities under the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens, in addition to meeting the requirements specified for the relevant invitation round.

Healthcare & Social Services

Healthcare and social services workers form another priority group.

Eligible occupations include physicians, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, physiotherapists, nurses and other qualifying health and social-service professionals.

For this category, candidates generally need at least 12 months of qualifying full-time work experience, or an equivalent amount of part-time experience, in an eligible occupation during the previous three years. The experience can have been acquired in Canada or abroad.

STEM & Skilled Trades

Canada is also targeting workers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The STEM list includes occupations such as civil, mechanical and electrical engineers, cybersecurity specialists and selected engineering technologists and technicians.

The skilled-trades category covers occupations including electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders, machinists, construction managers and heavy-duty equipment mechanics.

Other eligible trades include certain oil and gas drilling and services supervisors, according to the current IRCC list.

Education & Transport Workers

Education professionals are another targeted group.

The category includes secondary-school teachers, elementary and kindergarten teachers, early childhood educators and assistants, instructors of persons with disabilities and teacher assistants.

Transport occupations are also covered. Eligible occupations include pilots, aircraft mechanics and inspectors, flight engineers, flying instructors, avionics technicians and automotive service technicians.

Four Additional Categories

Canada has introduced four other targeted categories involving candidates with specific Canadian experience or military recruitment.

They cover physicians with Canadian work experience, senior managers with Canadian work experience, researchers with Canadian work experience and skilled military recruits.

For physicians, senior managers and researchers, candidates must have the required Canadian work experience and satisfy the other Express Entry conditions.

The skilled military recruits category is aimed at eligible foreign skilled military applicants recruited by the Canadian Armed Forces for qualifying roles.

Invitation Does Not Follow Automatically

Candidates who qualify for a category still have to compete within the Express Entry pool.

IRCC ranks eligible candidates according to their CRS scores before issuing invitations during category-based rounds. A candidate who receives an invitation then has 60 days to submit an application for permanent residence.

IRCC subsequently assesses the applicant’s programme eligibility, the accuracy of the information in the Express Entry profile, category eligibility and admissibility to Canada.

Labour Needs Drive the Categories

According to IRCC, the categories are designed around Canada’s identified economic needs.

The department uses labour-market information, projections and consultations with provinces, territories and other stakeholders when establishing the categories. It also reviews them regularly.

For 2026, Canada increased the minimum work-experience requirement for the renewed occupation-based categories from six months to one year within the previous three years.
