Asagba Seeks MTN Sponsorship For Asaba International Road Race

Royal Push for Sports Partnership
THE Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, has moved to secure corporate backing for the Asaba International Road Race, seeking sponsorship collaboration with MTN Nigeria.
The initiative was conveyed through the Chairman of the Asaba Sports Committee, Ogbueshi Peter Iweze, in a letter endorsed by the monarch.
During a courtesy visit by officials of MTN Nigeria to the royal palace, the traditional ruler highlighted the need for strategic partnerships to expand sports, tourism and community development in Asaba.
Road Race Positioned for Growth
The monarch described the Asaba International Road Race as a high-potential sporting event capable of gaining wider national and international recognition with proper corporate support.
He noted that Asaba had already demonstrated organisational capacity by successfully hosting the maiden edition of the race.
Analysts say road races across Africa increasingly attract sponsors because they combine athletics, city branding, tourism and public health messaging.
Beyond Sports: Cultural Economy
The Asagba also identified other community events requiring support, including the Ezeugbo Festival and the Ineh Festival.
He said these cultural programmes provide opportunities to showcase Asaba’s heritage while boosting hospitality, commerce and visitor traffic.
Experts note that sponsorship of local festivals and sports events can generate measurable economic value through:
Tourism Spending
Visitors spend on hotels, transport and food.
Brand Visibility
Sponsors gain direct consumer engagement.
Youth Participation
Sporting events encourage grassroots talent development.
Urban Identity
Successful events improve a city’s profile.
MTN Responds Positively
Responding on behalf of the company, MTN Nigeria South Eastern Region General Manager, Mr. Callima Inino, reportedly commended the monarch and described the proposal as timely.
He assured the palace that the request would be forwarded to relevant authorities within MTN Nigeria for consideration and possible approval.
That response keeps open the possibility of a partnership that could significantly expand the scale of the event.
Why Corporate Sponsorship Matters
Many local sports events struggle with logistics, prize money, media coverage and athlete incentives due to limited funding.
Private-sector partnerships often help solve these constraints by providing:
- Financial support
- Marketing reach
- Technical logistics
- Broadcast interest
- Long-term event sustainability
Final Word
The Asaba International Road Race may still be growing, but the push for MTN sponsorship signals bigger ambition. If successful, the collaboration could transform the race into a flagship sporting and tourism event for Delta State.
