Akwa Ibom Secures $6.2 Million World Bank Incentive For Good Governance

Akwa Ibom Earns World Bank Recognition for Governance, Transparency
State Receives $6.2 Million Performance-Based Incentive
AKWA Ibom State has received a performance-based reward of $6,206,745.42 under the World Bank-assisted State Action on Business Enabling Reform (SABER) Programme following its performance in the 2024 assessment of transparency, budget management and governance reforms.
Governor Umo Eno announced the award during the July edition of the state’s Monthly Covenant Service at the Government House Banquet Hall in Uyo, describing the recognition as an endorsement of his administration’s commitment to accountability, prudent financial management and institutional reforms under the ARISE Agenda.
He said the latest achievement reinforces ongoing efforts to strengthen public sector governance while creating a more transparent and business-friendly environment.
Recognition Adds to Governance Achievements
The governor noted that the World Bank recognition followed Akwa Ibom’s recent ranking among Nigeria’s leading-performing states in the Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies (CIAPS) Governance Performance Index.
According to him, the two recognitions reflect steady progress in governance and validate the administration’s long-term development strategy.
He stressed that sustainable development requires consistent planning, institutional discipline and responsible management of public resources.
Government Highlights Infrastructure and Transport Initiatives
Governor Eno also outlined several ongoing development projects across the state.
He announced the resumption of Ibom Air’s international flights between Uyo and Accra, Ghana, with services currently operating twice weekly, expressing optimism that additional international routes would be introduced as passenger demand grows.
The governor further disclosed that the state had procured 50 new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to modernise public transportation. He explained that the first batch of 20 buses had already arrived, while the remaining vehicles would be delivered later, adding that drivers would undergo specialised training before deployment.
Youth Empowerment and Tourism Receive Attention
Speaking on youth development, Eno reaffirmed plans to establish Youth Development Centres across all 31 local government areas to improve access to skills acquisition and empowerment programmes.
He said the initiative would strengthen youth participation in economic development and complement broader national efforts aimed at enhancing youth productivity.
The governor also encouraged residents and visitors to explore the state’s tourism attractions, including Arise Park and the ARISE Resort, describing tourism as an important contributor to economic growth and job creation.
Governor Warns Against Misinformation
Governor Eno urged journalists, social media users and members of the public to verify information before publication, warning that the spread of false information could undermine public confidence and social stability.
He also acknowledged the role of religious leaders in promoting peace and unity, thanking churches across the state for their continued prayers and support for government programmes.
Earlier, Senior Pastor of Victorious Family International, Prophet Williams, delivered a sermon on the theme “Divine Rechristening,” encouraging worshippers to remain steadfast in faith while expressing confidence in God’s promise of restoration and renewed purpose.
