Nigeria To UN: Partner With Us, Don’t Shame Us On Security Challenges

By ANDERSON (ANDY) CLIFF
NIGERIA has urged the international community to stop “naming and shaming” the country over its security challenges, calling instead for stronger collaboration to curb the illicit flow of small arms and light weapons. Speaking at the UN Security Council, Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires, Syndoph Endoni, warned that unchecked arms proliferation continues to fuel terrorism, banditry and communal conflicts across the Sahel and within Nigeria.
He stressed that global cooperation—not public criticism—is essential to addressing the humanitarian and developmental impact of these weapons. Nigeria highlighted national efforts, including the creation of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, and ongoing regional cooperation with ECOWAS and the Multinational Joint Task Force.
Endoni reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to international arms control frameworks and called for enhanced technical support, capacity-building and stronger border management to combat trafficking networks.
