FG Vows To End Frequent Grid Collapses

THE Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, says the Federal Government is taking decisive steps to end recurring national grid collapses and improve power reliability. Speaking in Uyo through the Permanent Secretary, Muhammadu Mamman, he said the creation of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) demonstrates the administration’s commitment to managing the grid more efficiently.
Nigeria’s grid has suffered repeated failures due to ageing infrastructure, poor funding, and vandalism, leading to nationwide blackouts and heavy reliance on generators. Adelabu said NISO’s retreat is part of efforts to ensure better coordination and reduce outages.
NISO Board Chairman, Dr. Adesegun Akin-Olugbade, praised staff for their role in achieving the successful synchronisation of Nigeria’s grid with the West African Power Pool, a milestone in regional power integration.
NISO MD, Abdul Mohammed, noted that the sector remains underfunded, stressing that power infrastructure is capital-intensive and requires greater investment. He said NISO aims to attract private-sector funding and optimise existing assets.
Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, represented by his Commissioner of Power, commended NISO for its progress and adherence to its mandate.
