IN preparation for the upcoming Local Government Elections scheduled for Saturday 1 November 2025, Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has declared Thursday 30 October and Friday 31 October as public holidays across the state.
The work-free days, according to the state government, are designed to enable residents to fully participate in the electoral process and exercise their civic responsibilities without hindrance.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Abubakar Usman, announced the decision in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the holiday will affect all public offices, markets, banks, and financial institutions throughout the state.
“The work-free days are intended to provide all eligible voters the opportunity to go to their respective polling units and cast their votes in the elections,” Usman said.
He added that movement of persons and vehicles will be restricted during the election period, except for those on essential duties, to ensure smooth and secure conduct of the exercise.
Governor Bago, who had earlier granted all political appointees a one-week break to return to their constituencies and mobilize for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), urged citizens to come out in large numbers to vote for capable leaders at the grassroots level.
“This election provides yet another opportunity for Nigerlites to elect visionary leaders who will champion development and represent our collective interests at the local level,” the statement read.
The governor also directed all security agencies in the state to guarantee peace and order before, during, and after the elections, assuring that the government remains fully committed to a transparent and hitch-free electoral process.
Governor Bago reiterated his administration’s belief in strengthening democracy through credible elections and active citizen participation.
