Ogun Urges Residents In Flood-Prone Areas To Relocate As Ogun River Rises
By AUGUSTINA McSOLOMON-OGHAKPERUO
THE Ogun State Government has warned residents of Akute, Alagbole, Isheri, Magboro, Makogi, Orimerunmu, Iro, Kajola, and parts of Abeokuta — including Lafenwa, Enugada, Adedotun, Iberekodo, Akin-Olugbade, and Ago-Odo — to relocate or move to higher ground ahead of expected flooding between 20 October and 3 November.
Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya said the overflow from the Ogun River is due to the controlled release of water from Oyan Dam following heavy rains from northern Nigeria.
He urged residents to stay away from riverbanks and wetlands, adding that dredging and tributary clearing are ongoing to ease water flow.
Oresanya assured that the situation will normalize within ten days, but cautioned that the state cannot fully prevent the impact of climate change. He also advised fish farmers in affected areas to harvest their fish early to avoid losses.
