TEN female football teams have kicked off the maiden Gov. Douye Diri All-Female Pre-Season Football Tournament in Yenagoa, holding from 19 to 25 October.
The competition, featuring eight NWFL clubs and two non-league sides, serves as a warm-up for the upcoming women’s league season. The teams are grouped into Group A — Bayelsa Queens, Delta Queens, Rivers Angels, Imo Strikers, and Nasarawa Amazons — and Group B — Bayelsa Princesses, FC Robo, Abia Angels, Edo Queens, and Heartland Queens.
Opening fixtures pit Bayelsa Princesses against FC Robo, and Abia Angels against Edo Queens, while Bayelsa Queens face Delta Queens in the star match at the Samson Siasia Stadium.
LOC Chairman Robin Apreala assured teams of fair officiating, noting that the event aims to strengthen clubs ahead of the new NWFL season. He praised Governor Douye Diri and the Bayelsa State government for supporting women’s football development.
Tournament Director Diseye Nwankwe confirmed that matches will pause midweek before the final group stage games.
