THE Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (NIEEE) has called for massive investment in digital infrastructure to drive Nigeria’s sustainable economic growth and strengthen its global competitiveness.
Speaking at the close of the 2025 International Conference and Exhibition of Power and Telecommunications (ICEPT) in Osogbo, NIEEE President Dr. Felix Olu said that digital systems — including data centres, high-speed networks, and cybersecurity — form the backbone of modern economies.
Dr. Olu highlighted several challenges slowing Nigeria’s digital transformation, such as limited funding, inadequate technical manpower, poor maintenance culture, and weak policy execution. He urged the government and private sector to prioritise digital infrastructure, ensure stable electricity, and invest in professional training to bridge skill gaps.
He noted that improved digital systems would increase productivity, foster innovation, and promote economic inclusion across sectors.
A communiqué issued after the conference recommended the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and automation into national ICT systems to enhance efficiency in energy and industry. It also called for stronger research–industry partnerships to accelerate clean energy adoption and achieve nationwide digital transformation.
