THE German government has donated a state-of-the-art canine facility to Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), a move expected to boost the country’s fight against narcotics.
Commissioning the centre in Lagos, NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) described it as “a milestone” that will enhance drug interdiction at airports, seaports, and borders.
He noted that NDLEA’s canine operations have already helped seize over 17.9 metric tonnes of narcotics, including 74.1kg of captagon intercepted at Apapa Port in 2021.
Germany’s Consul General in Lagos, Daniel Krul, said the cooperation strengthens security “not only for Nigeria, but for the region and Germany too.” Florian Bülow of Germany’s Federal Criminal Police likened the partnership to a “marriage built on trust and shared goals.”
Marwa added that the new complex would provide a dignified environment for personnel and sniffer dogs, motivating them to sustain excellence in drug control operations.
