FG, NBTE Partner To Raise Media Standards, Curb Misinformation
By ESTHER McWILLIS-IKHIDE
MINISTER of Information, Mohammed Idris, has pledged closer collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the Creative Media Sector Skills Council to integrate digital and creative media standards into Nigeria’s broadcast and information sector.
Speaking in Abuja during a courtesy visit by NBTE leadership, Idris said the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises skills development and technology. He described the Council as a transparent system that will empower practitioners, improve content quality, combat misinformation, and project Nigeria’s image more positively.
“The creative media sector is brimming with talent but often lacks structured pathways for recognition and certification. Well-trained professionals will raise broadcast standards and strengthen media literacy,” Idris noted.
NBTE Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Bugaje, highlighted the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) scheme, designed to certify informally trained professionals, stressing that industry-driven standards would make Nigerian media globally competitive.
Chairman of the Creative Media Sector Skills Council, Fatima Abubakar, said the Council—comprising over 70% private sector stakeholders—will set national benchmarks, ensure industry-ready graduates, and promote continuous professional development.
The Minister assured that the collaboration will drive inclusiveness, job creation, and global recognition for Nigeria’s creative and broadcast workforce.
