Suicide Prevention Day: NOA Calls For Collective Action, Breaks Stigma On Mental Health
THE National Orientation Agency (NOA) has renewed calls for greater awareness and collective action to tackle rising cases of suicide in Nigeria.
Speaking in Dutse, Jigawa State, during the commemoration of the 2025 World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), the state director of NOA, Ahmad Tijjani, stressed the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding mental health.
The World Suicide Prevention Day, observed annually on September 10, aims to raise global awareness about suicidal behaviours, promote mental health, and encourage open conversations that can save lives.
Suicide Is Preventable — NOA
Tijjani said the agency joined the rest of the world in advocating compassion, understanding, and dialogue as tools to prevent suicide.
He revealed that over 720,000 lives are lost to suicide globally each year, with every case leaving behind devastated families and communities.
“Suicide is preventable, and together we can change the narrative, break harmful myths and stigma,” Tijjani said. “We must encourage open and compassionate dialogue and check in on family, friends, and neighbours — sometimes a simple question can save a life.”
Encouraging Compassion and Professional Help
The NOA director urged Nigerians to listen patiently and without judgment to those who may be struggling. He also encouraged individuals experiencing emotional distress to seek professional help from doctors, counsellors, or crisis hotlines.
“Use words that heal. Your kindness and care can bring hope. World Suicide Prevention Day is not only about remembrance but about hope,” he added. “Let us stand together against stigma and show that every life matters.”
