Delta State Boosting Food Production Through D-CARES
THE Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has expressed his commitment to investing in agriculture as a key sector for the state’s economy.
The governor stated this at Owa-Ofie community in Ika-North East local government area of Delta State during the continuation of the 5th Tranche of agricultural inputs distribution to beneficiaries of the D-CARES programme’s result area 2 (FADAMA)
Represented by the commissioner for economic planning and chairman state cares steering committee Mr. Sonny Ekedayen, the governor underscored the state’s commitment to agricultural development through D-CARES, providing critical inputs to farmers and promoting long term economic resilience through capacity building, thereby ensuring food security and driving growth.
He urged the 40 poultry farmers and 30 maize farmers selected for this intervention at Owa Ofie community to wisely utilize the inputs, apply the knowledge knowledge gained from extension workers and transfer this knowledge to fellow farmers, ensuring food sufficiency.
The governor commended the beneficiaries for their modest dressing and community cleanliness affirming that the event showcases the government’s increasing support for the people who work tirelessly to sustain our food system
Earlier, Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources Barrister Val Areyinka addressed the beneficiaries, outlining the Delta State government’s efforts to support farmers through this programme, recognizing the difficulties of farming in the current economic climate, and noting the positive impact on food availability in the market, with many farmers already benefiting from the initiative.
The Chief Political Strategist to the governor, Dr Festus Okubor in his goodwill message, who spoke in Ika dialect , urged his people to make the most of the inputs presented, reminding them that ‘to whom much is given, much is expected’ . while encouraging them to support the governor’s cause .
While the state coordinator D-CARES, Dr. Patience Ogbewe, represented by Mr Chris Onyenike, director operations SCCU, pointed out that to reciprocate the governor’s support to farmers, it is crucial to attain the program’s goals and make the most out of the resources provided, which is the only way to justify the essence of the program.
In appreciation Mr. Okonta Broderick, a grateful poultry input beneficiary, thanked the state governor for selecting their community, while Mrs. Justina Erikume, a maize input beneficiary, burst into song and dance to express her appreciation.
Highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of inputs to the beneficiaries, and the cultural troop’s energetic dance performance.
