THE Military Pensions Board (MPB) has honoured a 98-year-old military veteran, Ex-Warrant Officer Echenim Emmanuel Ewemiwe, in recognition of his service and sacrifices to Nigeria.
The board’s Chairman, Maj.-Gen. Julius Osifo, led a delegation to celebrate the veteran at Ute-Erumu, near Agbor, in Ika North-East Local Government Area of Delta State.
According to a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by the board’s Public Relations Officer, Sqn.-Ldr. Aliyu Muhammed, the visit coincided with Ewemiwe’s 98th birthday.
The occasion also gave the board’s leadership an opportunity to identify with one of the country’s oldest military veterans.
Osifo’s delegation included Navy Commodore Galadima Ciroma, Director of Navy Pensions, and Capt. Robertson Akpojovwo, Delta Legion Chairman.
Speaking during the visit, the MPB chairman acknowledged the contributions and sacrifices of military veterans across the country. He also reaffirmed the board’s commitment to protecting their welfare and well-being.
Osifo stressed that veterans’ welfare remained a priority. Moreover, he explained that the visit demonstrated the board’s determination to recognise former service personnel beyond the administration of their pension benefits.
He said the board remained committed to preserving veterans’ dignity and acknowledging their contributions to the nation.
Speaking on behalf of the family, retired MWO Chuks Echenim thanked Osifo for travelling to Delta State to celebrate with their father.
He described the visit as a meaningful gesture that honoured the veteran on his milestone birthday.
Meanwhile, the celebration featured cultural performances and traditional dances. Family members, friends and well-wishers also joined the occasion.
The Aruwe of Ute-Erumu, members of the clergy and community leaders attended the event, adding a traditional and community dimension to the celebration.
