Akwa Ibom Unveils Cultural Heritage, Food & Tourism Attractions for Christmas Unplugged 4.0
AKWA Ibom State is preparing to turn its annual Christmas celebration into a major showcase of indigenous food, cultural heritage, entertainment and tourism as the government concludes arrangements for the fourth edition of Ibom Christmas Unplugged.
Scheduled to open on 30 November 2026, the festival will run until 31 December, with a programme designed to attract visitors, create business opportunities and promote the state’s cultural identity.
This year’s celebration carries the theme, “The Taste of Akwa Ibom: Our Food, Our Culture and Our Heritage.” Accordingly, organisers have placed traditional cuisine, cultural performances and community participation at the centre of the programme.
The event will bring together traditional dishes from the state’s 31 local government areas, musical performances, Christmas activities and a cultural pageant celebrating the Akwa Ibom woman. Through these attractions, the government hopes to strengthen the state’s tourism profile while giving residents and visitors opportunities to experience its diverse traditions.
Government Builds on Success of Previous Edition
The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Anieti Udofia, announced the preparations during a media briefing, where officials presented the programme to sponsors, partners, tourism operators and members of the public.
He explained that the briefing also provided an opportunity to assess the achievements of the 2025 edition and identify areas requiring improvement. According to him, the government intends to consolidate the previous successes while expanding the festival’s reach and economic impact.
The 2025 celebration attracted more than 4.5 million visits to Unity Park. In addition, over 800 vendors participated, while 300 kiosks provided spaces for businesses and commercial activities.
Building on that experience, the organisers plan to retain 300 kiosks for this year’s edition while providing additional spaces for brand displays. Consequently, the festival is expected to offer businesses, traders and entrepreneurs opportunities to reach a wider audience during the festive period.
The government also sees the event as more than an entertainment programme. Rather, it wants the celebration to become a platform for promoting local products, attracting investment and strengthening the state’s position as a tourism destination.
Ibom Kitchen to Showcase Traditional Dishes from 31 LGAs
Food will take centre stage through the Ibom Kitchen, one of the festival’s major attractions.
Under the arrangement, each of Akwa Ibom’s 31 local government areas is expected to present at least five traditional dishes on its allocated day. Visitors will therefore have the opportunity to explore the state’s culinary diversity through meals prepared to reflect the food traditions of different communities.
By bringing these dishes together, the organisers hope to demonstrate the relationship between local cuisine, cultural identity and community heritage. Moreover, the showcase will provide food vendors and other small businesses with opportunities to promote their products and attract customers.
The emphasis on indigenous cuisine also gives the festival a wider tourism dimension. Rather than relying exclusively on concerts and conventional Christmas entertainment, the programme seeks to make food an important part of the visitor experience.
For the state government, this approach offers an opportunity to preserve culinary traditions while presenting Akwa Ibom’s cultural resources to a broader audience.
Mbopo Akwa Ibom to Promote Women’s Potential
Another major attraction will be Mbopo Akwa Ibom, a cultural pageant designed to celebrate the beauty, intelligence, character, cultural values and aspirations of Akwa Ibom women.
The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Culture and Tourism Commission, Mrs. Ime Udo, described the initiative as a platform built around the philosophy of “Beauty with a Purpose.”
She explained that the programme would go beyond conventional beauty competitions by helping young women discover their potential, develop careers and pursue greater economic independence.
Under the arrangement, the winner will become the state’s tourism ambassador for 365 days. She will also receive a brand-new car, a cash prize to be announced by Governor Umo Eno and an office within the Office of the Governor.
The grand finale will take place on 20 December at the Arise Palm Resort Banquet Hall.
Through the initiative, organisers intend to connect cultural representation with personal development and tourism promotion. The winner’s ambassadorial role will also give the state an opportunity to use the pageant to promote its attractions and cultural identity beyond the festival period.
Music, Entertainment & Community Activities to Enrich Celebration
Beyond the culinary displays and pageant, the organisers have prepared a wide range of entertainment and community activities to sustain public interest throughout the month.
Daily performances by local artistes will provide a platform for musicians and other performers to reach new audiences. Meanwhile, Christmas carols, a Niger Delta cultural day, children’s activities, reggae night and old-school night will offer different forms of entertainment for residents and visitors.
The programme will also feature a celebration with civil servants, a women’s day, a corporate consortium and visits to orphanages. These activities are intended to extend the festival beyond entertainment by encouraging participation from different social and professional groups.
As the month progresses, the celebration will culminate in a New Year’s Eve crossover at Unity Park on 31 December. Residents and visitors will gather for a night of worship and thanksgiving as they welcome the New Year.
The range of activities reflects the organisers’ intention to make the festival a broad community celebration, rather than an event limited to a single audience or cultural interest.
Government Links Tourism Promotion with Economic Development
The Commissioner for Information, Dr. Aniekan Umanah, said the state’s investment in tourism formed part of its wider economic development strategy.
He explained that the government wants to develop local tourism sites and promote Akwa Ibom to wider audiences. According to him, attracting more visitors would support businesses, stimulate commercial activity and create employment opportunities.
A government pavilion will therefore feature prominently at the festival. It will showcase projects undertaken by Governor Umo Eno’s administration while presenting investment opportunities in tourism, agriculture and other sectors.
The pavilion is expected to provide visitors, potential investors and business representatives with information about the state’s development initiatives and economic prospects.
Meanwhile, the participation of vendors, artistes and community-based businesses is expected to create commercial opportunities throughout the celebration. From food sellers and traders to performers and service providers, several groups stand to benefit from the increased public activity around the event.
The organisers also intend to use the festival to strengthen links between cultural preservation and entrepreneurship. By providing platforms for local products and talents, they hope to encourage greater recognition of the state’s creative and cultural industries.
31st December Crossover to Close Month-Long Festival
With preparations nearing completion, Akwa Ibom is positioning Ibom Christmas Unplugged 4.0 as a major end-of-year gathering built around food, culture, tourism and community participation.
The festival will open on 30 November and close on 31 December, bringing together residents, visitors, businesses, cultural groups and entertainers.
Its success will ultimately depend not only on visitor numbers but also on the opportunities it creates for local entrepreneurs, the visibility it gives indigenous traditions and the benefits it delivers to communities.
For the state government, the celebration offers an opportunity to present Akwa Ibom’s cultural identity as an important tourism asset while supporting economic activity during the festive season.
