DOPF Chairman Enebeli Tasks Online Publishers On Accuracy, Accountability
THE Chairman of the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF), Mr Emmanuel Enebeli, has urged online publishers and other media professionals to uphold accuracy, fairness, verification and editorial independence, particularly in their coverage of Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Enebeli gave the charge during the Forum’s 2026 Annual Conference and 6th Annual Lecture Series in Asaba, Delta State, where he highlighted the media’s responsibility in promoting electoral integrity, protecting public confidence and strengthening democratic governance.
Speaking on the theme, “Democracy Under Pressure: Electoral Integrity, Security Challenges and Media Accountability in Nigeria,” the DOPF chairman said the issues under discussion were central to the credibility of elections, the health of democratic institutions and the safety of citizens.
He warned that misinformation, unverified reports and irresponsible publications could distort public understanding of electoral processes and undermine confidence in democratic institutions.
According to him, online publishers must report without fear or favour, resist sensationalism and hold public institutions accountable in the public interest.
“As online publishers, we have a responsibility to uphold accuracy, fairness, verification and editorial independence,” Enebeli said, stressing that the media’s credibility depends on its commitment to responsible journalism.
The DOPF chairman cautioned that irresponsible reporting could erode public trust and weaken the media’s watchdog role.
He said journalists and publishers must be prepared to hold themselves accountable while demanding transparency from public officials and institutions.
Enebeli also advocated constructive engagement among media organisations, electoral authorities, security agencies, political parties, civil society groups and citizens, describing cooperation among stakeholders as important to sustaining democratic governance.
He said the annual lecture provided a platform for stakeholders to examine challenges confronting Nigeria’s electoral system and explore practical approaches to improving democratic accountability.
The chairman expressed hope that discussions at the event would generate actionable recommendations to inform public policy, strengthen democratic institutions and improve accountability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Enebeli acknowledged the contributions of the chairman of the occasion, the guest lecturer, the discussant, partners, members of the organising committee and other stakeholders whose support contributed to the programme.
On behalf of the Forum’s executive council and members, he welcomed participants and expressed hope that the deliberations would produce meaningful outcomes for Nigeria’s democracy.
He urged stakeholders to recognise their individual and collective responsibilities in safeguarding electoral integrity and promoting a more informed public.
