Oborevwori Directs Julius Berger To Fix Washed-Out Agbarho Section Of East-West Road
DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has directed Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to immediately intervene in the washed-out section of the East-West Road at Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.
The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Asaba.
Aniagwu said the governor’s directive followed the hardship being experienced by motorists, residents, businesses and other road users after a section of the federal highway was washed out.
Although the East-West Road is under the Federal Government, the commissioner said Oborevwori was concerned about the impact of the road failure on Deltans and other Nigerians who use the busy corridor.
He said the section collapsed following strong erosion associated with heavy rainfall, prompting the governor to direct Julius Berger to undertake remedial works on the affected portion.
Aniagwu said the intervention reflected the state government’s commitment to keeping critical infrastructure functional, irrespective of whether such infrastructure falls under state or federal jurisdiction.
He said the decision was driven by the immediate needs of residents and road users rather than bureaucratic boundaries.
According to him, the East-West Road is a major economic corridor linking communities and facilitating the movement of people, agricultural produce, goods and services across the Niger Delta and beyond.
He said disruption along the route could have significant consequences for commuters, transport operators, traders and businesses that depend on the corridor.
Aniagwu assured motorists and other road users that the intervention would help alleviate the difficulties caused by the damaged section and improve traffic flow.
The commissioner said the Oborevwori administration would continue to work with relevant Federal Government agencies and private-sector partners to address infrastructure challenges capable of affecting economic activities and the wellbeing of residents.
He said the intervention was also in line with the infrastructure component of the administration’s MORE Agenda.
Aniagwu urged motorists and other road users to exercise caution around the affected section while remedial works are being carried out.
