Nigeria Prize For Literature: Three Poets Bring Different Visions To The Final Stage
NIGERIA’S poetry scene takes centre stage as James Ngwu Eze, Ogaga Ifowodo and Tares Oburumu emerge as the three finalists for this year’s Nigeria Prize for Literature.
Their paths differ sharply, yet their shortlisted collections share a common interest in Nigeria’s troubled history, identity, violence and social realities.
Eze, a poet, journalist and cultural organiser, has built a reputation for taking poetry beyond the printed page. His debut collection, dis-possessed, won the 2020 Association of Nigerian Authors Poetry Prize. He also founded the Udala Nation Project, which combines poetry and music.
His shortlisted collection, Unbind Me Now, confronts injustice, memory and the anxieties of a troubled world. Through his work, Eze presents poetry as both artistic expression and a means of engaging society.
If Eze represents an emerging literary voice, Ifowodo brings decades of experience and intellectual engagement. The lawyer, activist and award-winning poet has spent much of his career examining power, freedom and Nigeria’s difficult political history.
His sixth poetry collection, Why Does God Need a Gun?, explores religious and political violence. It also raises difficult questions about faith, bloodshed and the human consequences of extremism.
Oburumu, meanwhile, brings a younger and distinctly Niger Delta perspective to the shortlist. The poet, essayist and playwright won the 2022 Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poets.
His shortlisted collection, Flora’s Love Colony, examines history, identity and the complex inheritance that shapes contemporary Nigeria.
From 223 entries, the competition has narrowed to these three distinct voices. One poet will eventually claim the $100,000 prize.
Yet the shortlist offers more than a contest for a major literary award. It also demonstrates the range of contemporary Nigerian poetry and the different ways writers continue to interpret the country’s past, present and uncertain future.
