Convicted FTX Founder Appeals For Presidential Mercy
By ANDERSON CLIFF
SAM Bankman-Fried, the former cryptocurrency billionaire convicted over the collapse of the FTX exchange, has formally applied for a presidential pardon from U.S. President Donald Trump. The application is now listed as pending on the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of the Pardon Attorney website.
The request marks the latest effort by the 34-year-old former FTX chief executive to overturn the consequences of one of the biggest financial fraud cases in U.S. history. Bankman-Fried was sentenced in 2024 to 25 years in federal prison after being convicted on multiple counts of fraud and conspiracy linked to the multibillion-dollar collapse of FTX and its affiliated trading firm, Alameda Research. Prosecutors said billions of dollars belonging to customers were misappropriated, causing massive financial losses for investors and clients worldwide.
The pardon application follows months of speculation that Bankman-Fried and his family were seeking executive clemency. Earlier this year, he publicly expressed interest in receiving a pardon and granted media interviews from prison while challenging his conviction through the courts. He is also pursuing an appeal after a federal appeals court recently upheld his conviction and prison sentence.
Despite the formal filing, the chances of clemency appear uncertain. White House officials have pointed to President Trump’s earlier remarks indicating he had no plans to pardon the former crypto executive. Under the U.S. Constitution, however, the president retains the sole authority to grant or deny presidential pardons regardless of recommendations made through the Justice Department’s review process.
The collapse of FTX in late 2022 became one of the most significant corporate failures in the cryptocurrency industry. The case intensified global scrutiny of digital asset regulation and corporate governance, while prompting calls for stronger investor protection and oversight across the rapidly evolving crypto market.
