NIGERIA’S rising inflation and cost-of-living pressures are driving a significant shift in consumer behaviour, with more people opting to repair damaged mobile phones and other digital devices instead of purchasing new ones.
The Vice Chairman of Abuja GSM Village, Mr. Abdulfatah Aliyu, disclosed this in Abuja, saying worsening economic conditions have forced consumers to prioritise essential spending while extending the lifespan of existing gadgets.
According to him, many Nigerians who previously replaced malfunctioning devices now prefer repairs because of the escalating prices of smartphones and electronic accessories.
Repairs Replace Device Upgrades
Aliyu explained that the increasing cost of new smartphones has changed purchasing decisions across the country.
He noted that consumers now carefully evaluate their spending priorities before making major purchases, choosing affordable repairs over expensive replacements whenever possible.
“If you own a phone worth ₦500,000 and it develops a minor fault, you are more likely to repair it than spend about ₦1 million on another device that performs largely the same functions,” he said.
He added that this trend has significantly increased demand for phone repair services across the country’s technology hubs.
Screens and Charging Ports Top Repair Requests
According to Aliyu, damaged screens and faulty charging ports account for the highest number of repair requests received by technicians.
He attributed most of the damage to accidental drops, poor handling practices and misuse by children.
He advised phone owners to handle their devices carefully, stressing that proper maintenance can considerably extend the lifespan of smartphones and other electronic gadgets.
Aliyu also urged parents to supervise children when handling electronic devices, noting that improper insertion of charging cables frequently damages charging ports.
High Cost of Spare Parts Changes Repair Practices
The Abuja GSM Village official further explained that the rising prices of brand-new replacement parts have encouraged technicians to use genuine second-hand components salvaged from other devices.
According to him, original used parts often provide better quality than some newly manufactured alternatives while remaining more affordable for customers.
However, he stressed the importance of transparency, urging repair professionals to always inform customers whenever alternative replacement parts are installed.
Technology Market Adjusts to Inflation
Industry observers say the trend reflects broader changes in consumer spending patterns as inflation continues to squeeze household incomes.
With smartphones increasingly regarded as essential tools for communication, business, education and financial transactions, many Nigerians now view repairs as a more practical and cost-effective option than replacing functional devices.
