Delta South Secures Its First Federal Medical Centre
HEALTHCARE delivery in Delta South Senatorial District has received a major boost following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assent to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Oleh Establishment Bill, paving the way for the establishment of the district’s first federal tertiary healthcare institution.
The legislation, sponsored by Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, represents a significant milestone in efforts to expand access to specialist healthcare services in the oil-producing region, which has long lacked a federal medical centre despite its strategic contribution to Nigeria’s economy.
The presidential assent officially transforms the bill into law and sets the legal foundation for the establishment, funding and operation of the proposed healthcare facility.
Legislation Aims to Address Longstanding Healthcare Deficit
For decades, residents of Delta South have depended largely on state-owned hospitals or travelled considerable distances to access specialised medical treatment available in neighbouring states and other parts of the country.
The establishment of the Federal Medical Centre in Oleh is expected to bridge this healthcare gap by providing advanced medical services, reducing referral burdens, strengthening emergency healthcare and improving access to specialist treatment for millions of residents.

Reacting to the development, Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas described President Tinubu’s approval as a landmark achievement for Delta South and a major step towards correcting years of imbalance in federal healthcare infrastructure.
He said communities in the Niger Delta have for many years borne the environmental and health consequences associated with crude oil exploration while lacking adequate access to high-quality medical facilities.
According to the senator, the new Federal Medical Centre will improve healthcare outcomes, enhance public welfare and provide modern medical services closer to the people.
