D’Tigers End Window With Statement Win Over Rwanda

D’Tigers Finish Unbeaten With Emphatic Victory
NIGERIA’S senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, produced a dominant display on Sunday, crushing Rwanda 106-62 to complete a flawless qualifying window and secure a place in the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers.
The emphatic 44-point victory sealed a perfect three-game sweep for Nigeria, following earlier wins over Tunisia and Guinea.
Iroegbu Leads Ruthless Nigerian Offence
Point guard Uche (U.C.) Iroegbu orchestrated the attack brilliantly, finishing with 17 points and seven assists as Nigeria overwhelmed Rwanda from the opening quarter.
Caleb Agada, Ikechukwu Mekowulu and Stan Okoye each contributed 13 points, while D’Tigers combined efficient shooting with aggressive defence to record one of their most comprehensive victories in recent years.
Nigeria established an early lead and never allowed Rwanda back into the contest, dominating both offensively and defensively throughout the game.
From Pressure to Perfection
The victory completed a remarkable turnaround for a team that entered the qualifying window under pressure to revive its World Cup hopes.
D’Tigers opened the campaign with a hard-fought 84-81 win over Tunisia, before edging Guinea 80-79 in a dramatic comeback victory.
Against Rwanda, however, Nigeria left no room for drama, delivering a statement performance that underlined the squad’s growing confidence and cohesion.
Fizdale’s Impact Becomes Clear
Under head coach David Fizdale, the team showed significant improvement across all three matches. Experienced players and emerging talents combined effectively, while Nigeria’s defensive discipline and ball movement improved steadily throughout the tournament.
With three consecutive victories, D’Tigers have restored momentum to their qualification campaign and strengthened their bid for a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Nigeria will now turn its attention to the second round of the African qualifiers, where tougher opposition awaits as the race for World Cup qualification intensifies.
