Delta Introduces Mandatory QR Code Verification for Commercial Vehicles
Government Launches Digital Vehicle Identification Initiative
THE Delta State Government has unveiled a mandatory QR Code/Barcode Verification Scheme for commercial vehicles, introducing a new digital identification system aimed at improving public safety, strengthening security and enhancing the regulation of commercial transportation across the state.
The initiative, announced through the Directorate of Transport, forms part of the government’s broader drive to modernise transport administration by creating a comprehensive digital database of commercial vehicles operating within Delta State.
Authorities said enforcement of the new policy will begin on Monday 13 July 2026, after which commercial vehicles that fail to comply with the verification requirements may face sanctions.
Registration and Digital Coding Process Begins
According to a public notice signed by the Director of Public Communication and Functioning Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Stella Macaulay, the state government has appointed Wydil Innovative Limited as the consultant responsible for implementing the verification programme.
The consultant will oversee the registration, onboarding, digital coding, data capture and verification of all commercial vehicles operating within the state.
Government officials explained that every registered commercial vehicle will receive an approved QR code or barcode that can be electronically scanned to instantly verify the vehicle’s registration status and other official records.
Improving Security and Passenger Confidence
The state government said the initiative is intended to strengthen security by making it easier for law enforcement agencies, transport regulators and members of the public to distinguish properly registered commercial vehicles from unregistered operators.
Officials believe the digital verification system will also improve passenger confidence by providing commuters with an easier way to identify legitimate transport operators before boarding.
The government therefore advised residents to patronise only commercial vehicles displaying the approved QR Code/Barcode Verification sticker.
Operators Urged to Comply Before Deadline
Commercial drivers, transport unions and vehicle owners have been urged to obtain the required verification codes before enforcement begins.
Authorities warned that compliance will become compulsory once implementation enters the enforcement stage, adding that the programme is designed to promote a safer, more organised and better-regulated transport system.
The government further appealed to stakeholders across the transport sector to support the initiative, describing it as an important component of Delta State’s ongoing efforts to improve service delivery, strengthen security and modernise public transportation through digital technology.
