NUJ Raises Alarm Over Security Threats, Illegal Levies In Delta
Union Reviews State of Governance in Delta
THE Nigeria Union of Journalists, Delta State Council, has issued a broad assessment of governance and public administration challenges in the state, highlighting concerns over security, urban planning, revenue collection and education management.
The observations formed part of resolutions adopted at the union’s monthly congress in Asaba, where delegates examined issues affecting communities across Delta State.
The congress concluded that stronger enforcement of laws and more effective implementation of government policies are necessary to address many of the challenges confronting residents.
Security Challenges Remain Persistent
Among the most pressing concerns identified by the union was the continued rise in criminal activities across the state.
Congress cited reports of kidnapping, cult clashes, armed robbery and related offences as issues requiring urgent attention from security agencies.
While commending ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies, the union maintained that more needs to be done to improve public safety and reassure residents.
The NUJ recommended enhanced intelligence-driven policing strategies and expanded community engagement programmes.
Illegal Revenue Collection Draws Criticism
The union strongly criticised the activities of fake revenue collectors and unauthorised taskforce operators allegedly extorting traders, transport operators and motorists.
Congress argued that illegal collections not only burden citizens but also undermine legitimate government revenue systems.
The union insisted that all government-related revenue collection should be conducted through authorised personnel using approved payment channels.
It commended local government authorities that have taken action against illegal operators while calling for wider enforcement across the state.
Managing Urban Growth and Public Infrastructure
The rapid growth of urban centres such as Asaba, Warri and Effurun also featured prominently during discussions.
Congress expressed concern over the increasing conversion of flyovers and public spaces into commercial areas and informal transport hubs.
According to the union, these activities create safety hazards, contribute to traffic congestion and undermine urban planning objectives.
The NUJ called on government agencies to protect public infrastructure and ensure compliance with planning regulations.
Billboard Regulation and Environmental Safety
The union also raised concerns about the increasing number of unauthorised billboards and advertising structures across major cities.
Congress warned that poorly constructed signages could pose significant dangers to residents and motorists, particularly during storms and adverse weather conditions.
The union urged regulators to strengthen inspection regimes and enforce standards governing outdoor advertising.
According to the communiqué, effective regulation would improve public safety while protecting government revenue streams.
Questions Over Education Levies
Another issue highlighted was the growing number of complaints from parents regarding alleged unauthorised levies in public schools.
Congress called for greater oversight within the education sector to prevent arbitrary charges and ensure compliance with approved policies.
The union recommended transparency measures, including the public display of all approved fees and charges within schools.
Such steps, it argued, would promote accountability and protect families from excessive financial burdens.
Livestock Law and Population Monitoring
The congress further called attention to concerns surrounding the implementation of the Delta State Livestock Breeding, Rearing and Marketing Regulation Law.
The union warned that inadequate enforcement could increase tensions between farmers and herders and negatively affect agricultural productivity.
It also urged immigration and security authorities to strengthen lawful monitoring mechanisms in response to reports of increasing undocumented migration into parts of the state.
Media Reaffirms Oversight Role
At the conclusion of the congress, the NUJ reaffirmed its role as a stakeholder in promoting transparency, accountability and responsible governance.
The union pledged continued engagement with government institutions and public agencies to ensure that issues affecting citizens receive appropriate attention.
According to Congress, addressing insecurity, illegal revenue collection, weak policy enforcement and governance gaps remains essential to achieving sustainable development and improving the quality of life across Delta State.
