Outrage In Delta School After Armed Intruders Assault Teachers Over Seized Mobile Phone
School Discipline Dispute Escalates into Violence
WHAT began as a routine disciplinary action over the use of a mobile phone in class reportedly spiralled into a violent confrontation at Erhavwe Secondary School in Ekrerahavwe, Agbarho Kingdom, leaving teachers injured and reigniting concerns about security within Nigeria’s educational institutions.
Teachers and school administrators have recounted how suspected thugs allegedly invaded the school premises after a female student became upset over the confiscation of her mobile phone during class.
The incident, which occurred on May 14, later attracted national attention after videos of the confrontation circulated widely on social media, drawing condemnation from education stakeholders and members of the public.
How the Incident Unfolded
According to accounts provided by school officials, the dispute began when a Mathematics teacher, Mr. Charles Ovwigho, confiscated a student’s phone during a lesson.
The teacher alleged that the student was distracted by activities on the device and was also distracting other learners in the classroom.
Ovwigho explained that after seizing the phone, he requested the student’s mathematics notebook in order to assess her participation in class.
He claimed that inconsistencies in the notebooks presented to him raised further concerns and that the student subsequently became upset when her phone was not immediately returned.
Shortly afterward, a group of young men reportedly entered the school premises and confronted him.
Teachers Describe Violent Encounter
The school’s Vice Principal, Mr. Lucky Otuaga, said he was attending to a parent in his office when he heard a disturbance within the school compound.
Responding to the commotion, he discovered that non-students had allegedly entered the school and were attacking a member of staff.
According to him, attempts to separate the attackers from the teacher resulted in injuries to several individuals, including himself.
The Mathematics teacher said he was physically assaulted during the confrontation and had his reading glasses damaged.
School officials maintain that the attack represented a serious breach of security and exposed both staff and students to unnecessary danger.
Community Leaders Intervene
The Chairman of the Education Committee in Ekrerahavwe community, Mr. Edematie Sunday, said community leaders and local vigilante personnel became involved after the incident.
He stated that some suspects were apprehended and that the matter was subsequently reported to law enforcement authorities before being charged before a magistrate’s court.
According to him, efforts are currently underway to achieve an amicable resolution following appeals from family members connected to the case.
The school principal, Mrs. Patience Ekakitie, confirmed that discussions aimed at resolving the dispute outside court were ongoing.
Student Suspended as Investigation Continues
Sources within the school disclosed that the female student at the centre of the controversy has been placed on indefinite suspension pending the outcome of investigations and consultations.
School authorities have also reiterated existing regulations prohibiting students from bringing mobile phones into classrooms.
Officials say the policy is supported by both government directives and decisions reached by the school’s Parent-Teacher Association.
