African Teams Show Promise Despite Uneven Opening Round At World Cup

Africa Begins Campaign with Victories, Draws and Setbacks
AFRICA’S representatives at the 2026 FIFA World Cup have experienced a mixed opening round, producing encouraging performances against some of the tournament’s strongest nations while also suffering a number of disappointing defeats.
Of the continent’s ten participating teams, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire secured victories, four nations earned valuable draws, while four others began their campaigns on the losing side. The results leave several African teams in contention for places in the knockout rounds as the tournament gathers momentum.
Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire Secure Late Victories
Ghana delivered one of the most dramatic moments of the opening round, defeating Panama 1-0 in a tense Group L encounter at Toronto Stadium.
The Black Stars appeared headed for a stalemate before Yirenkyi struck in the fifth minute of stoppage time to snatch victory and hand Ghana a crucial three points.
Côte d’Ivoire also made a winning start, edging Ecuador 1-0 in Philadelphia. The Elephants needed a late breakthrough from Diallo, whose 90th-minute goal proved decisive in securing maximum points.
Both victories highlighted the resilience and determination that African teams have brought to the tournament.
Morocco, Egypt and DR Congo Impress Against Heavyweights
Several African nations earned respect with strong performances against highly rated opponents.
Morocco, continuing the momentum generated by recent international successes, held Brazil to a 1-1 draw. Saibari’s early strike put the Atlas Lions ahead before Brazil responded through Júnior.
DR Congo also showed character in a 1-1 draw with Portugal. After conceding within six minutes, the Congolese fought back through Wissa to earn a deserved point.
Egypt similarly frustrated Belgium in Seattle, securing a 1-1 draw after Emam Ashour’s opener was cancelled out by an unfortunate own goal.
Meanwhile, Cape Verde produced one of the defensive displays of the round, shutting out Spain in a disciplined goalless draw that earned widespread praise.
Tough Opening Matches for Senegal, Algeria and Others
Not all African teams enjoyed positive starts.
South Africa were beaten 2-0 by Mexico, while Tunisia endured the continent’s heaviest defeat after falling 5-1 to Sweden despite briefly raising hopes through Rekik’s goal.
Senegal faced a difficult challenge against France and ultimately lost 3-1. Bradley Barcola and Kylian Mbappé inspired the French victory, while Mbaye’s late effort served only as consolation for the Lions of Teranga.
Algeria also struggled against Argentina, with Lionel Messi delivering a stunning hat-trick in a commanding 3-0 win for the South Americans.
Qualification Race Remains Wide Open
Despite the mixed results, Africa’s overall performance suggests several teams remain capable of advancing to the knockout stages.
The continent’s representatives collectively recorded two victories, four draws and four defeats, demonstrating both the progress and challenges facing African football on the global stage.
With many group-stage matches still to come, teams such as Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco and Egypt have positioned themselves strongly, while others will be looking for quick recoveries to keep their World Cup dreams alive.
