Oborevwori Approves Police Headquarters In All 25 Delta LGAs To Boost Security

Delta Unveils Major Security Expansion Plan
IN a significant move aimed at strengthening public safety and enhancing law enforcement capacity, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the construction of divisional police headquarters in all 25 local government areas of the state.
The governor announced the initiative while delivering the keynote address at the Delta State Security Summit 2026 held in Asaba, where stakeholders from across the security and governance sectors gathered to discuss strategies for addressing emerging security challenges.
The decision represents one of the most ambitious investments in security infrastructure undertaken by the state government in recent years and underscores growing efforts to improve crime prevention and response capabilities across Delta.
Security Summit Focuses on Collective Responsibility
The summit, themed “Security: A Collective Responsibility,” brought together an array of stakeholders, including security chiefs, local government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society groups, youth organisations, women associations and members of the private sector.
Participants examined the evolving security landscape and explored collaborative approaches to tackling threats ranging from kidnapping and armed robbery to organised criminal activities and other forms of insecurity affecting communities.
Governor Oborevwori stressed that security cannot be left solely to law enforcement agencies, noting that effective crime prevention requires cooperation among government institutions, local communities and other stakeholders.
Preparing for Future State Policing
Beyond addressing current security concerns, the governor explained that the establishment of police divisional headquarters across all local government areas is also intended to prepare Delta State for the possible implementation of state policing in the future.
The debate over state police has gained momentum nationwide as policymakers seek alternative approaches to improving security and enhancing localised policing structures.
According to Oborevwori, building the necessary infrastructure now will place Delta in a stronger position to adapt to future reforms in Nigeria’s security architecture whenever such changes are approved at the national level.
Strengthening the Fight Against Crime
The governor said the new divisional headquarters would improve operational effectiveness by providing law enforcement agencies with better facilities and enhanced logistical support.
He noted that security agencies continue to face complex threats, including kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery and other criminal activities that require coordinated responses and improved intelligence gathering.
The proposed facilities are expected to expand police presence in local communities, improve response times and strengthen crime detection and prevention efforts throughout the state.
Security analysts have often argued that increased police visibility and improved infrastructure can contribute significantly to community confidence and public safety outcomes.
Security as a Foundation for Development
Oborevwori emphasized that economic growth and sustainable development are closely linked to peace and security.
According to him, no society can attract investment, create jobs or achieve meaningful progress in an environment characterised by fear and instability.
The governor stated that his administration remains committed to creating a safe environment for residents, businesses and investors through sustained investment in security infrastructure and operational support.
Building on Existing Security Partnerships
The governor also highlighted ongoing collaboration between the state government, security agencies and local communities as part of broader efforts to strengthen Delta’s security architecture.
Over the years, the administration has invested in operational logistics, intelligence gathering and other support mechanisms designed to enhance the effectiveness of security agencies across the state.
Observers say the latest initiative signals a continuation of those efforts while demonstrating the government’s intention to institutionalise long-term security planning.
As Delta State continues to pursue economic growth and social development, officials believe the expansion of police infrastructure will play a critical role in maintaining peace, protecting lives and creating a safer environment for future generations.
